Big Cheese Forum Topic Discussion and Updates:

  • This agenda item has been postponed until next week’s meeting (April 3rd)because of many Representatives being unable to attend the meeting due tothe Easter holiday.
  • Confirmed guests for Big Cheese Forum (April 17th) are President Cassidy,Provost Osirim, Dean Balthazar, Pelema Morrice (Chief Enrollment Officer), Kari Fazio (Chief Financial Officer), Glenn Smith (Head of Facilities), Stephanie Nixon (Assistant Dean of Diversity, Social Justice and Inclusion, and Title IX Coordinator Assistant Dean of Diversity, Social Justice and Inclusion, and Title IX Coordinator), and Gina Siesing (Chief Information Officer). Ethel Desmarais was unable to attend, therefore Gina Siesing was invited in her place to talk about new initiatives in Library and Information Technology Services (LITS), including the College’s new email system.

Old Business:

• There was no Old Business.

New Business:

  • East versus West is this coming weekend (April 2nd) from 10:30 PM to 1:00AM. The theme is East Coast versus West Coast. Bryn Mawr and Haverford students must bring their One Cards to gain entry to the party, and their State ID’s if they want to drink. Only students over the age of 21 will be able to drink. Students are allowed one Tri-Co Guest instead of the usual three.
  • The Pem East and West Dorm Presidents have had trouble securing bouncers for the event. There is an extra pressure to hire paid bouncers this year because Public Safety has decided to take a step back from interfering with Campus Parties, therefore putting more responsibility (including financially) on the dorms and students themselves. Paid Bouncers are hired through the Paid to Bounce program and provide more assurance that the bouncers will do their job if they are being compensated. Ideas for possible ways to create dialogue regarding the issue were asked of the students present. Sources of the budget for parties was briefly discussed, as well as potentially using money originally allocated to other dorms that planned to host parties but never did. Cuts to the number of Tri-Co guests allowed per student as well as the time frame of the party were therefore cut because of these developments.Meeting Adjourned at 7:28 PM

Announcements:

Rhea Manglani ‘17: Announcements is a time when any member of the Bryn Mawr community can make an announcement. We’ve allowed ten minutes for this item. This week I intended to talk about the topics or questions and the people that are going to big cheese forum, what they are going to focus on, etc. Because it’s Easter Sunday and we’re missing a bunch of people we will move this to next week.

Genesis Perez-Melara ‘19: Genesis Perez-Melara, Co-Head of Elections. 2016 Spring Special Elections, the elections are going to start tomorrow at 9:00 AM at end at Tuesday at 7:00. Make sure to read candidates’ statements posted online.

Lillian Oyen-Ustad ‘19: When do regular, non-special spring elections start?

Genesis Perez-Melara ‘19: Not this week but next week. If you have any questions or concerns, you can contact me or Mariana at elections@brynmawr.edu.

Rhea: Anyone else have announcements?

Your Two Cents:

Rhea Manglani ‘17: Your Two Cents is a time when any member of the community can propose a new topic for discussion. We have ten minutes for this item. Any new items for discussion?

Big Cheese Forum Topic Discussion and Updates:

Rhea Manglani ’17: We pushed this discussion back a week, but I wanted to update everyone on who’s confirmed. Dean B. has not confirmed but it is on her calendar; Ethel from Student Financial Services cannot make it so instead we asked Gina from the library to come and talk about the new Email system and the library. Are there any questions?

Nora Dell ‘19: Is there anyone else coming?

Rhea Manglani ‘17: KCass, Glenn Smith from Facilities, Stephanie Nixon, Pelema, Kari Fazio, and Provost Osirim. KCass said that the Provost and Dean know about the event and [are] coming.

Lillian Oyen-Ustad ‘19: What’s the date of Big Cheese forum?

Rhea Manglani ‘17: April 17th, is that a Sunday? Yes, April 17th. I always get confused about the 17th and the 18th. This is not a normal SGA meeting; a regular one follows. Encourage your friends to come because they can talk with senior staff about different issues on this campus.

Old Business:

Rhea Manglani ‘17: Old Business is a time when a member of the Representative Council can discuss an old topic previously brought up at an SGA meeting. This topic must be related to the Representative Council member’s position. We have ten minutes for this agenda item.

New Business:

Rhea Manglani ’17: New Business is a time when any member of the Representative Council can bring up a new item or announcement for discussion. This item must be related to the Representative Council Member’s position. We have allowed ten minutes for this agenda item.

Modupe Olufemi ‘17: Modupe Olufemi, Pem East Dorm President. Dijia Chen ’16: Dijia Chen, West Dorm President.
Rachel Ofili ’16: Rachel Ofili, Pem West Dorm President.

Modupe Olufemi ‘17: Okay, so I don’t know if you guys know East v West is coming up this weekend and we’ve had trouble securing bouncers and money to pay bouncers. Campus Safety is not going to be as involved for the party, so dorms have to take double responsibility with money and responsibility for [people who attend]. Are there any ideas on potential dialogue? Parties are unofficial traditions.

Melanie Bahti ‘16: This is a conversation that has happened in some forms in previous years and I think that there was a Party Fund set up through ResCo to help fund events.

Modupe Olufemi ‘17: There is but because we are expected to pay bouncers that money has decreased.

Melanie Bahti ‘16: Is it possible for parties to obtain extra money? Rhea Manglani ‘17: Can you repeat that?

Melanie Bahti ‘16: There is some party money through ResCo? Like, is there something that allows SGA to give money? I don’t know if there’s something in the by-laws that allows for that.

Jocelyne Oliveros ‘18: I’ll look into that. I don’t think there is.
Melanie Bahti ‘16: Okay, I think that Dorm Presidents would ask for it.

Olivia Hollinger ‘16: Normally; because there’s an issue of profiling and being way too hostile they are trying to step back. That’s why they’re saying that paid bouncers would be better because it helps regulate them more than unpaid bouncers.

Hannah Chinn ‘19: To follow up, when the bouncer is paid what is the difference? Olivia: I don’t understand.

Hannah Chinn ‘19: What is the difference between a paid bouncer and a non-paid bouncer?

Olivia Hollinger: Paid bouncers means that you are paid to bounce and receive training. Volunteer bouncing is unpaid and not as accountable.

Hannah Chinn ‘19: I was wondering that when the program was originally set up that bouncers…

Olivia Hollinger ‘16: No because normally they…

Hannah Chinn ‘19: No the paid bouncer.

Olivia Hollinger ‘16: I don’t understand.

Rachel Bruce ’18: Please remember to use name and class year when speaking, thank you!

Erin Saladin ‘16: I don’t know if this is particularly feasible, but I don’t know what the other dorm’s party dorms look like and in the future if it is possible to transfer any of those funds into East’s or West’s?

Olivia Hollinger ‘16: We have a big party fund between all the dorms. At the beginning of the year, we go around and ask if they want to have a party? They say yes, and the money is divided. This year dorms received $146.00. That gets allocated to every dorm. That’s a good question. I don’t think Erdman used theirs, so maybe East and West could use that? ResCo has to vote on it.

Sarah Andrews ‘17: We hired bouncers for Rock, there was no difference for paid and nonpaid. I don’t understand because you’re basically using the same way.

Melanie Bahti ‘16: I think you’re right because the actual job they do…but if you’re paid your more likely to show up or more assurance that people will be there.

Modupe Olufemi ‘17: If anyone doesn’t have anything else then we are going to make cuts because we don’t have enough bouncers. It would be a hassle to get everyone to fill the shifts. Party is going to be one tri-co guest instead of three, parties will be carded, and you need state ID and to be of age to drink.

Rhea Manglani ‘17: Any other New Business? Motion to end the meeting?

Erin Saladin ’16 motioned.

Melanie Bahti ‘16 seconded.

Stephanie Montalvan ’18: Motion to end the meeting.

X seconded.

Rhea Manglani ’17: This is a Representative Council vote only, please take a moment to consult with your co-held positions. Yes? No? Abstain?

Motion passed by visual ballot.

The meeting was adjourned at 7:28 PM.
