03-18-12 SGA Meeting Minutes

Vrinda calls meeting to order at 7:10pm

Absent: Lee McClenon, Courtney Pinkerton, Pam Lavin, Julia Fahl, Emily Tong, Eva Sharma, Lily Scott, Izzie Armentrout, Jessie Abreu, Sophie Balis-Harris, Emma Geering, Debbie Deegan.

Announcements

Saba Quadir ‘13: The health center is hosting a stress buster tea this year on Monday, March 26 from 6:00pm – 8:00pm.  It was very successful last year; we had over 60 people come! The theme is sleepover, so there will be chair massage, homemade desert, pizza, coloring, nail polish, etc.  Also the Pre-health club is having a tea on Monday, March 26 at 7:00pm.  It is mostly for freshmen and sophomores deciding if they want to be a science major.  There will be faculty from science departments and free food.

Ali Raeber ‘13: April round of elections open March 18th.  Please nominate people and tell them why they would be good at that position.  Nominations close Sunday the 25th at 7pm.

Christine Calderon ‘13: This Friday is the Mujeres Culture Show.  Doors open at 7:00pm/7:15pm and the show starts at 7:30. There will be food!

Elizabeth held ‘12: If you are a senior in this room, you are going to get an email to run a dorm election.  They will be Tuesday, April 17th, which is room selection, at 10pm and will take about a half an hour.  The elections board will write you a script.  If you want to do it, contact me.

Tyler Garber ‘14: We are starting April appointments round and applications are available on Moodle.  They are due Friday, March 30th at 5pm and the interviews begin Monday, April 2nd.  For more information go to appointments.blogs.brynmawr.edu.  We are going to have an info session on Tuesday, March 27th at 7:00pm in Taylor C and an interview workshop with Michelle from the CDO on Wednesday, March 28th at 6:00pm in Taylor C.

Carolyn Jacoby ‘14: A while back we voted on special events funding, and the I <3 Female Orgasm event is coming up this Wednesday at 8pm in Goodhart.

Sowmya Srinivasan ‘13: I sent an email about grievances and I get back to you by this Friday about how much you get.  The SFC reimbursement forms are available in the campus center next to the copy machine and can turn in forms over there.

Irene shin ‘13: Third Thursday meeting for Honor Board is in Merion common room at 8pm on March 22.  It will be about common spaces across campus.

Vrinda Varia ‘13: We are opening the sga appreciation planning committee. If you are interested, it is a volunteer based committee, if you are interested let me know.

E-Board Introductions

Irene Shin ‘13:

  • Position: Head of the Honor Board
  • Goals:
    • To increase Social Honor Code awareness.
    • I will be having open hours will be held 3-5 every Thursday in Guilds main room if you have any questions or want to talk about the Honor Code.
    • Try and keep the Honor Code by ways of making it more publicized when new classes come onto campus by means of Customs week.

Tyler Garber ’14:

  • Position: Vice President
  • Goals:
    • Streamlining the appointments application process on Moodle.
    • Informing the community about the open positions
    • Making the committee more visible on campus
    • Getting more applicants for positions.

Vrinda Varia ‘13:

  • Position: President
  • Goals:
    • Increase accountability by streamlining a means of measuring it.
    • Increase visibility by fostering a relationship between the sga and faculty and staff.
    • Continue to host campus-wide events
    • Support student activism.

Sowmya Srinivasan ’13:

  • Position: Treasurer
  • Goals:
    • Make budget interviews more friendly
    • Make SFC reps more accessible to clubs
    • Switch over to Moodle

Natalie Kato ‘14:

  • Position: Secretary
  • Goals:
    • Increase communication between SGA meetings and student body
    • Distribute the minutes and agenda by the Wednesday/Thursday after the meeting
    • Reformat Mawrk Notes and continue to produce them once a month
    • Increase communication between the computer-related roles in SGA
    • Keep better record of the initiatives, surveys, minutes, and resolutions that are produced

Plenary Recap

Vrinda Varia ‘13: Your class presidents are sending out surveys about Plenary and how it went.  Please continue to encourage people to fill them out.

Nkechi Ampah ‘15: Having the brunch open beforehand allowed people to be more aware of the fact that plenary was actually happening, also people were happier having brunch.

Saba Quadir ‘13: I wanted to second what nkechi said. Got a lot of positive response because of the brunch and Exec Board tabling at erdman for brunch to remind people to go.

Vrinda Varia ‘13: We are looking into what constitutes a plenary resolution and who has the jurisdiction to decide that.  Will be bringing proposed bylaws to you guys.  If you have any suggestions, we will have a proposal for you guys.

Karina Siu ‘14: Is there a way to get extension plugs throughout Goodhart?

Vrinda Varia ‘13: I think we can make that happen

Sowmya Srinivasan ‘13: Quick recap of special events funding.  We are giving $500 for GMGE Ghana, $1400 for Get Your Spring On, $670 for She’s the First and Project Educate Africa, and $2100 for I <3 Female Orgasm.

Old business:

Vrinda Varia ‘13: At the last sga meeting it was mentioned that the new incoming class is going to bigger, but that is not true. The incoming class is going to be the same size.  There has been a larger applicant pool.

Saba Quadir ‘13: Does that include transfers?

Vrinda Varia ‘13: The number of freshmen stays the same and the number of transfers stays the same.

Kendra Kelly ‘13: Is there any conversation about the retention of students? Are those numbers increase? Why that might be?

Vrinda Varia ‘13: I know it is an administrative concern.  There is more a talk about how we can improve the Bryn Mawr experience.  I will let you know.

Saba Quadir ‘13: Is there a big cheese this semester?

Vrinda Varia ‘13: Yes, there is a big cheese in two weeks on April 1st.

Natalie Zamora ‘14: What was happening with the concert space idea?

Adelyn Kishbaugh ‘12: I have been to a few meetings with Mary-Beth and should have stuff to present at SGA soon.
