Letter from the 08-09 SGA Executive Board October 27, 2008

Dear Members of the Bryn Mawr Self Governance Association,

116 years ago, Bryn Mawr students united to form the first Self-Governance Association in the country. With this change, we gained the responsibility to decide how to rule themselves and how these rules should be enforced. Mawrters have passed down this tradition of self-governance in order to maintain a community where students can lead and participate in discussions on the most important issues facing the college. I now write on behalf of the ’08-’09 S.G.A. Executive Board in order to continue this tradition.

We have two goals for the upcoming year: INCLUSION and ACCOUNTABILITY. As the S.G.A Exec Board, we are entrusted with representing the needs of the students, by constantly making sure that all your needs and critiques are being considered when making important decisions. We want to make sure that your voice is being heard, not only at Sunday night S.G.A meetings, but all the time. We’ve begun the process by changing the format and set-up of S.G.A meetings and creating office hours (listed below). We thought that by formally introducing ourselves, we would be giving you the chance to hold us accountable.

Hello! My name is Aheli Purkayastha and I’m the President of S.G.A. I’m a senior History of Art and Political Science double major. I enjoy dancing in my room to cheesy pop music, talking about American Politics and S.G.A. of course. I see the role of the President of the S.G.A. to make the organization more capable of serving the community. One of my first tasks will be to work with the current Executive Board, the current Assembly members, Faculty, Staff and Students to collate and prioritize the pertinent issues on campus. I would like to make S.G.A. more accessible and usable by the community. Every Bryn Mawr student has a right to know what’s happening in S.G.A. and we need to make sure that S.G.A. is doing everything it possibly can for the Bryn Mawr community. I want to bring my personal experience and work ethic with this amazing group of smart, dedicated, and motivated women to form a S.G.A. who will leave a legacy you will be proud of.

My name is Ashley Madden and I am your S.G.A. Vice President! I am a senior Psychology Major at Bryn Mawr and am currently finishing the Pennsylvania Certification Program for Elementary Teaching. I’ll be fully certified to teach the little ones right after graduation. During my time as Vice President I would like to get participation in S.G.A. up not only through attendance but also in appointments. I hope to work closely with the appointments committee to fill necessary positions around campus. We’ve already started the first round and I am very excited to begin the interview process for all the great positions. I am here to represent you, so I would hope that you would feel comfortable coming to me with your concerns or ideas for what S.G.A. could be. I will be holding office hours, just like the rest of the executive board, and would love for people to take advantage of them!

Hi, my name is Katie Kellom, I am class of 2009 and a Psychology major. I am also a second-year lacrosse player, and I do independent research with pigeons with the Psychology Department under the supervision of Paul Neuman (not the salad dressing guy). This year I will be serving as the Head of the Honor Board. One of my goals is working with students on Bryn Mawr’s campus to improve the Bi-Co relationship when it comes to our Honor Codes. I will be having meetings about this and other topics throughout the year, so look out for emails from me if you are interested!

I’m Kendra Hayde, and I’m a senior Math and Classical & Near Eastern Archaeology double major from Florida. I love playing and listening to music, visiting theme parks, and talking about anything to do with the entertainment industry, in addition to my keen interest in the structure and vision of S.G.A.. This year, I would like to help decode the S.G.A. Constitution to help increase awareness of S.G.A. on campus by updating and tailoring this document (and in turn, this trail-blazing group) to the modern Bryn Mawr students needs and interests.

My name is Klaralee Charlton. I’m a senior who served on the Student Finance Committee for 2 years prior to being elected in March 2008. As treasurer this year, I hope to accomplish three things:
1. Increase the ease by which clubs are able to submit their budgets and increase communication between club executive members and their representatives.
2. Come to an agreement with Haverford’s Student Government Treasurer as to how funding of bi-college clubs will occur in the future and set up a system for future treasurers to follow with regard to this issue.
3. Work to find clubs space on campus to store club related materials, props, and supplies as I see this as a key issue to clubs being able to expand and make the most of their money.
